Introduction (Pengenalan)

Ferns are easily distinguished from other plants by the fact that they have no proper flowers. Their leaves are also usually feathery in appearence. Ferns can grow on the soil as well as on plants and rocks. Many Malaysian ferns are used for their medicinal value. Some ferns are even taken as food, for example, the popular "Pucuk Paku" literally translated means the "Fern's Shoots" is a favourate local vegetable and can be found prepared and cooked in various different ways. Ferns are very common in Malaysia. This is because of the hot wet climate favoured by ferns.

Paku-pakis mudah dibedzakan daripada tumbuhan-tumbuhan lain daripada fakta ia tiada mempunyai bunga yang benar. Daun paku-pakis biasanya merupai bulu burung. Paku-pakis boleh membiak di atas tanah dan juga di atas pokok lain atau di atas batu. Banyak jenis paku-pakis Malaysia digunakan kerana nilai perubatannya. Ada juga paku-pakis yang boleh dimakan, sebagai contoh, "Pucuk Paku" yang diminati ramai ialah sejenis sayur-sayuran tempatan yang boleh disediakan berbagai cara untuk menjadikan lauk hidangan. Paku-pakis banyak dijumpai di Malaysia. Ini boleh disebebkan kepada iklim berlembab dan panas yang baik untuk paku-pakis membiak.
